Our Story

Every story has a beginning, middle, and an ending.

We are absolutely pleased to share how the Maine Gold Star Family Memorial at Capitol Park in Augusta has come to be.

This dream, to Honor and Remember Maine's Fallen Heroes and their Gold Star Families, resulted from one picture.

At the 2015 Wreaths Across America - Official Page convoy, Scott and Lorna Harris, parents of United States Army Specialist Dustin Harris, made a stop at the New Jersey Gold Star Family Monument in Holmdel, New Jersey.

This beautiful Memorial, and the adjacent Vietnam Memorial, left a lasting impression on them, and those of our Committee.

Throughout 2016, various ideas, locations, and fundraisers were discussed, with an outline created in early 2017.

In early 2017, a visit to the New Jersey Gold Star Family Memorial in Holmdel, New Jersey was made by Committee members. Through this visit of the Memorial grounds, and meeting with the Director, a clear direction of the Maine Gold Star Family Memorial was made.

A year after it's inception, the Maine Gold Star Family Memorial was decided to be at Captiol Park in Augusta. Being adjacent to the Maine Vietnam Memorial, in a tranquil setting, and allowing for visitation by the public were all integral components for the Committee's selection.

Representative Jared Golden was one of our first contacts made at the Maine Legislature. His dedication to our Country, with his own Service, and understanding the importance of the Maine Gold Star Family Memorial, has made him a champion of "The People's Memorial".

Many meetings with the Maine Legislative Council followed over the later part of 2017 and early part of 2018.

On June 26, 2018, LD 1918 was introduced by Representative Erin Herbig to the 128th Maine Legislature and Senate. This bill was unanimously approved in the Senate with the assistance of Senator Troy Jackson. Unfortunately, this session ended before LD 1918 was enacted into law.

More than two months later, on August 30th, 2018, LD 1918 was enacted unanimously into law, ensuring that the Maine Gold Star Family Memorial resides at Capitol Park in Maine's Capital.

It only seems fitting that this date is the birthday of United States Army MSG Gary Gordon, Medal of Honor Recipient for his selfless sacrifice on 3 OCT 1993 in Mogadishu, Somolia. His family have been supporters of this Memorial.

With this beginning, we cannot wait for the middle and ending of our story to be written!

This includes you - the supporters of the Maine Gold Star Family Memorial - to help us ensure "The People's Memorial" is built in 2019.
